HYDROGEN PEROXIDE GAS PLASMA

Sterilization with hydrogen peroxide plasma is a low-pressure, low-temperature, nontoxic process

  • Hydrogen Peroxide(H202) gas plasma sterilizes by oxidation
  • H202 does not require aeration since its byproduct of water and oxygen are not toxic
  • The sterilization temperature is below 131 degrees F
  • At high concentration, hydrogen peroxide can be irritating to the skin
  • The PPE required for removing items from aborted cycles is hand gloves
  • OSHA PEL for hydrogen peroxide of 1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA)
  • Hydrogen peroxide gas plasma should not be used to sterilized powders and liquids or water-absorbing items.
Peroxide-absorbing packaging material should not be used.
    Examples are:
muslin wraps, cellulose-based products like paper/plastic and wrappers

Tyvek pouches are acceptable packaging material. Trays and container systems must be approved for the sterilization process

Hydrogen peroxide gas can be used to sterilize:
catheters, endoscopes, laparoscope, plastics, electrical devices and orthopedic instruments
